ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern women’s soccer team (2-2-1) took their first draw of the season Saturday, ending their match on the road against the Eckerd Tritons (2-2-2) without a goal in their out-of-conference match.
NSU controlled the match right from the start, commanding the ball for the majority of the first 20 minutes. Although neither team scored in the opening stanza, the Sharks were the more active team on offense. NSU recorded eight first-half shots-on-goal, half of which were from near point-blank range. Eckerd’s Holly Buresh played flawlessly in goal to keep the Sharks off the board.
The offensive output simmered for both teams in the second half. The Sharks only registered two more shots-on-target before the 75th minute. Goalkeeper
Amanda Kopale (Cape Coral, Fla.) should great poise for a freshman, saving Eckerd’s only shot-on-goal in the second period.
The Sharks had their opportunity to move ahead towards the end of regulation. NSU’s two All-Region honorees,
Dilja Olafsdottir (Jr., Reykjavik, Iceland) and
Malin Broberg (Jr., Stockholm, Sweden), each had their opportunities. Olafsdottir attempted to score on a header off of a corner kick while Broberg had a solid strike saved in the run of play.
The first overtime period was uneventful, with the most dramatic moment coming from a Kopale save on an Eckerd corner kick. The second overtime had the same outcome.
Melissa Madden (So., Vero Beach, Fla.) had her team’s last chance at a goal with less than a minute left.
In the end, the Sharks forced Eckerd to make 13 saves. Broberg led the team with eight shot attempts. The match was reminiscent of their road-draw against Eckerd in 2007, when the Tritons earned a program-best 25 saves.
The Sharks will stay on the road for their next outing, a rematch with Florida Tech Tuesday in Lakeland, Fla. at 6 p.m.
