MIAMI – The Nova Southeastern rowing team split the opening regatta of the 2013-14 season against rival Barry at the Ronald W. Shane Water Sports Center Saturday.
"We got some great early season race experience against one of the fastest teams in the country today," said head coach Stephen Frazier-Wong. "Our freshmen and the rest of our squad will really benefit from seeing this quality of competition. Barry is a great opponent to have so close to us and I think our two schools will make each other faster as we seek to represent the SSC and the South-Central Region."
The Sharks picked up a win in the varsity-4 while Barry claimed the varsity-8 event. In the V4, the Sharks put together an experienced lineup of all returners and clocked in at 18:11.12. The boat beat Barry's time of 18:51.3.
The NSU V4 boat was comprised of:
Adrianna Rosario (So., Pembroke Pines, Fla.),
Kelsey Obringer (Jr., Port Republic, N.J.),
Caitlin Mooney (Sr., Centerville, Mass.),
Emily Harrington (Sr., Virginia Beach, Fla.) and coxswain
Amanda Hudon (So., Sebastian, Fla.).
"This was an encouraging way to start off the season," said Mooney. "We still have more fights ahead of us but we are excited to challenge ourselves and are hungry for success."
In the V8, Barry earned the win by clocking in at 15:52.8. NSU, sporting a new lineup with four freshmen, crossed the finish line in a time of 16:41.6.
The NSU V8 boat was made up of: coxswain
Courtney Berger (Sr., Sarasota, Fla.),
Stephanie Hauck (Sr., Somers Point, N.J.),
Cassily Lobaugh (Fr., Milton, Ga.),
Kristen Page (Fr., San Diego, Calif.),
Megan O'Donnell (Jr., Lake Worth, Fla.),
Daesha Roberts (Fr., Yulee, Fla.),
Kelly Scott (Jr., Hobe Sound, Fla.),
Tori Torrisi (So., Saratoga, N.Y.) and
Bethany Warlich (Fr., Leeds Point, N.J.).
"This race, being our first race with new teammates, represents the start of a steady progression for the next several months,"said Hauck. "We got a great solid first race under our belts, which we will use to make improvements and then never look back as we push forward through the rest of the season. We have a lot of respect for Barry because racing them so early in the year pushes us even harder and reminds us not to be complacent."
The Sharks will return to the water next weekend in the annual First Coast Head Race in Jacksonville, Fla. Oct. 12.
