FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern rowing head coach
Stephen Frazier-Wong has announced the addition of three student-athletes for the 2014-2015 season during the early signing period. Victoria Porretti, Jenna Beavon and Danica Buse will join the NSU family next season.
"We are extremely happy to announce these three additions to the NSU family," said Frazier-Wong. "We know that they will thrive here and we cannot wait until they step on campus in the fall of 2014. Coach Samantha Sarff, our recruiting coordinator, has done a tremendous job with these student-athletes. She has spanned from coast to coast with our fall signees.
Porretti (Norristown, Pa.) comes from Philadelphia area powerhouse, Mount Saint Joseph Academy, and will be competing for a spot in the championship boats. "Victoria blew us away with her skills in the coxswain seat when she practiced with us on her official visit and we think she will be a great leader for our boats in the future," said Frazier-Wong.
"NSU seems like a perfect fit from its academic opportunities, campus life and great Division II rowing team," stated Porretti. "I am really looking forward to expanding my knowledge academically and as a coxswain. I cannot wait to be on the water with my new teammates this coming August."
Beavon hails from Kettering, Ohio and rows for the Greater Dayton Rowing Association. "Jenna is a stellar student as well as a great athlete," said Frazier-Wong. "Her program focuses on sculling and small boats, which enhances the technical foundations of rowing. We feel she will bring a balance of academic excellence, sound rowing fundamentals and tremendous power to the team."
"I chose NSU because I really loved the atmosphere and the girls on the team," said Beavon. "I felt like they really put school first and that they were all rowing because they genuinely loved to row. I can't wait to join and row with people who are committed to their school and their team and are working hard and having fun."
Buse will have the farthest to travel to attend NSU out of the 2014 class. From Marysville, Wash., Buse rows for Everett Rowing Association and attends Marysville Getchell HS. "Danica is a driven, dedicated athlete who is also a standout in the classroom," said Frazier-Wong. "Danica's capacity for hard work inspires us and will be essential to our team as we strive to achieve excellence."
"I have been interested in NSU ever since I found out about the dual admissions program (specifically the osteopathic medicine program), and the new marine facility," said Buse. "I've wanted to go into the medical field for a long time, and I love the osteopathic ideology. I also have a strong background, and love, for marine science because I'm currently in a local early college program called the Ocean Research College Academy (ORCA). What really moved me to choose NSU was the visit to the campus. I had visited other campuses, but none of the colleges fit me quite as well academically and athletically, and at NSU I felt like I clicked with the team right away. By the end of the trip, I could see myself going to NSU and being really happy. Honestly, I think what I'm most excited about is just being in a new environment. I'm also looking forward to being a part of a strong team, while earning my education at NSU."
