Track and Field All-Region Honorees Announced

The Sharks have 12 women and nine men selected.

NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has named All-Region honorees for the 2012-13 NCAA Division II outdoor track & field season, the Nova Southeastern track and field team had 12 women and nine men earned this honor.

The top five from each region in individual events and each member of a relay ranked in the region’s top three have earned the All-region distinction for this season.

Jessica Osteen (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.) is the most decorated Shark as she received four All-region honors. She received this honor in the 400-meter hurdles, 400-meter run, 4x400-meter and 4x400-meter relays. At the Peach Belt Conference Championship, Osteen claimed the Co-Women’s Athlete of the Year with teammate, Peri Bowman (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.). Osteen won the 400-meter run with a NCAA automatic qualifying standard with a time of 56.07, a meet record. She also was the 400-meter hurdles champion with a time of 1:01.97 to make her second provisional qualifying time of the meet. Osteen then continued her success and participated in the 4x400-meter relay, where she led off for the Sharks as they won the event with a stadium record time of 3:49.13. The team included: Monica Sapp (Fr., Miami, Fla.), Quannisha Allen (Fr., St. Augustine, Fla.) and Johniqua Stafford (Sr., Fort Worth, Texas). She also competed in the 4x100-meter relay team of Osteen, Sapp, Nicole Poole (Fr., Altimonte Springs, Fla.) and Ciona Williams (Fr., Stockton, Ca.), which came in second place with a time of 46.94 meters.

Following next with three all-region honors was Williams and Stafford in their events. Williams notched the PBC Freshman of the Year award. During her time at the PBC, she claimed second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.26 and third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.46. She also anchored the 4x100-meter relay team that came in second place. Stafford received all-region honors in the 100 and 200-meter events. At the PBC, she was part of the 4x100-meter relay with both Williams and Osteen that came in second.

Bowman and Poole received two all-region honors in their respective events. Bowman received PBC Co-Women’s Athlete of the Year with teammate, Osteen. At the PBC, Bowman became the first NSU conference champion, in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 11:11.69. Bowman took third in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18.21.10. Bowman took fourth place in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:57.31. Poole earned honors in taking part of both the 4x100-meter relay and the 4x400-meter relay.

The Sharks who earned all-region in their individual events were Sapp, Rose Howell  (So., St. Louis, Mo.), Alexandria Palm (So., Winnebago, Ill.), Vanessa Munley (So., Moosiac, Pa.), Brittany Todaro (Fr., Plantation, Fla.), Janell Azaret (So., Miami,.Fla.) and Brittaney Smash (Jr., Arlington, Texas ). Sapp earned all-region honors by participating in the 4x400-meter relay which came in first, breaking a stadium record with a time of 3:49.13. Howell earned her honor in the steeplechase, coming in second with a time of 11:56.21. Palm followed behind Howell in third with a time of 12:00.74. Munley earned her first conference title in the pole vault event with a jump of 3.33-meters. Following Munley in the same event were Todaro and Azart who came in second and third with jumps of 3.03-meters and 2.58-meters, respectively. Smash rounded out the all-region honors by coming in third in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:53.83.

On the men’s side, both Talyn Washington (So., Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) and Derrick Wood (Jr., Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) notched two all-region awards. Washington earned the honors in participating in the 400-meter run where he took home the PBC title with a time of 48.61. He took home a second title in the 4x400-meter relay team that shattered the stadium record with the team of Washington, Robert Moise (Sr., Plantation, Fla.), Cameron Hemenez (So., Orlando, Fla.) and Patrico Morency (So., Naples, Fla.) with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 3:15.00. Wood took third and fourth place finishes in the long and triple jump with leaps of 1.93-meters and 13.41-meters, respectively.

The rest of the Sharks who took individual honors were Moise, Morency, Cameron Hemenez (So., Orlando, Fla.), Ben Futerman (Jr., Freehold, N.J.), Long Tran  (Jr., Saignon, Vietnam), Ryan Jerothe (So., New Port Richey, Fla.) and Ian Towne (Jr., South Walton, Minn.). Moise, Hemenez and Morency were all participants of the stadium shattering 4x400-meter relay team that took home the conference title with a time of 3:15.00. Morency also took home a conference title in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.33. Futerman earned honors in the discus throw by coming in third with a throw of 39.92-meters. Tran earned honors in the 10,000-meter run where he came in ninth at the conference championship with a time of 33:05.32. Jerothe and Towne earned honors in the pole vault event where the men had a 2-3 finish in the event at the PBC with leaps of 4.70-meters and 4.40-meters, respectively.

The season has ended for most of the Sharks however, selected student-athletes have advanced to the NCAA championship that will be held in Pueblo, Colo. held from May 23-25. Check back at nsusharks.com for live results.
