Women’s Soccer Opens Its Season with Two Matches This Weekend

The Sharks take on West Georgia on Thursday and Georgia College on Saturday.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern women's soccer team will begin their 2013 campaign when they open up against the West Georgia Wolves on Thursday Sept. 5, at 6 p.m. and the Georgia College Bobcats on Saturday Sept. 7, at 11 a.m. Both games will be played at the NSU Soccer Complex.

The Sharks' season opener will be against a tough regional opponent in West Georgia. The Wolves finished last season with a 6-11-3 record, going 2-5-2 in Gulf South Conference play. The Wolves return their two leading goal scorers and point leaders from a season ago, in Mariela Ortega and Amalia Hernandez, who combined for 12 goals on the season. These teams have met just one time, in 2007, where the Sharks came away with a 1-0 victory.

On Saturday, the Sharks take on Georgia College, a team they beat 1-0 on an overtime goal by Malin Broberg (Sr., Stockholm, Sweden) in the first game of the 2012 season. The Bobcats return their primary threat up top in Ashley Veilleux, who scored nine of the team's 27 goals last season. GC finished last season with a 10-8-1 overall record and a 5-5-1 record in the Peach Belt Conference.

The Sharks enter the 2013 season with 19 returners, who all have college soccer playing experience. Along with all of the returnees, head coach Michael Goodrich brought in eight newcomers to add depth to each position on the roster.

The Sharks finished last season tied for fourth in the conference with a 3-3-2 SSC mark, which allowed NSU to host the opening round of the Sunshine State Conference tournament. The team was 4-8-3 overall.
