LIVE STATSFORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men's and women's soccer teams return to the NSU Soccer Complex Wednesday to host the Florida Tech Panthers. The women kick off at 4:30 p.m., while the men's game is slated for 7 p.m.
In the first Sunshine State Conference match of the season on Saturday, the NSU women's team (3-2-0, 0-1-0 SSC) fell on a penalty kick in overtime to Saint Leo, 2-1.
Sierra Lelii (R-Jr., Seminole, Fla.) notched her third goal in two matches, and fifth of the season, in the loss.
FIT (3-4-1, 0-1-0 SSC) also took their first loss in conference on Saturday, falling to No. 8 Rollins 6-1. The Panthers have only scored four goals in their three wins and just seven on the season. Mary Watson leads the way with two, despite only starting two games. Julia Kantor has stood in goal for all 740:51 of the Panthers' season, allowing 14 goals and recording 48 saves, the second-highest total in the SSC.
The Sharks are 7-6-1 in the SSC era against the Panthers, and 3-2-1 at the NSU Soccer Complex. The numbers confirm how evenly matched the teams have been; seven of those 14 matches ended 1-0, with three in favor of the Sharks, and four for the Panthers. The Sharks lost both of their meetings with FIT last season, the first a 3-0 defeat at the NSU Soccer Complex, and the last time NSU defeated the Panthers was at home in 2012. In that win,
Stephanie Moench (Jr., Austin, Texas) recorded the first points of her collegiate soccer career on a goal and an assist.
The men's team (3-2-1, 0-1-0 SSC) enters Wednesday with a long history of tight battles with the Florida Tech Panthers in the SSC era. Of the seven matches between the teams at the NSU Soccer Complex, four have gone into extra time, two of those ending in draws.
Andrea Giombetti (Sr., Rome, Italy) recorded four saves in last season's scoreless draw.
Historically, NSU's biggest victory came in its first ever SSC match between the two teams in 2004. NSU Hall of Famer Matthew Parry led the Sharks to an incredible 7-1 win, scoring two goals in a span of 19 seconds and completing his hat trick six minutes later.
FIT (4-2-1, 1-0-0 SSC) started conference play on Saturday with a thrilling 3-2 double-overtime victory over Rollins. Jack Willison of the Panthers scored the game-winner in the 107th minute that earned him SSC Offensive Player of the Week honors. Adin Kavara currently leads the team with six goals and 13 points, both good for second in the SSC. Josh Thomas has a team-best four assists. Goalkeeper Mitch Thorn has allowed just seven goals in six matches and 533:35 minutes played.
