CONDITIONS:
  • A gorgeous fall day in New England.  There was a light breeze all day and the temperature was in the high 60's. There was fast racing throughout the entire race weekend.
 RACE FORMAT:
  • Head style race, one boat at a time with a staggered start trying to catch the boat in front and stay ahead of the boat behind.
  • The course was the classic 5,000 meter Charles course. There were many turns with several 90 degree and one long 180 degree turn, six bridges and tons of competition. This is a coxswain's race.
RESULTS:
  • The same varsity 4 boat that rowed last weekend at Head of the Indian Creek, consisting of coxswain Victoria Porretti, Lisette Villarreal, Nicole Baliszewski, Kassie Moss and Emily Stewart finished in seventh place and only 24.8 seconds behind the winning time set by University of New Hampshire.  This was a very fast year due to the great conditions.
BEYOND THE RESULTS WITH COACH FAY:
  • This group raced much more aggressively today than they did at Head of the Indian Creek last weekend.  They relaxed a little more and did not hold back like they did last weekend.  We are very happy with the race even though they finished in the same place as last year.  It was a much deeper field and possibly one of the deepest in years in this event.  Freshman Emily Stewart set a very quick pace right away taking 32 to 33 strokes per minute for most of the race.  Also having senior Victoria Porretti in the driver's seat helped this group immensely.  This is her third year coxing this course and her abilities no doubt gave us the edge we needed to beat some those crews by a less than a few seconds.
  • All in all, a great step for the squad as we look forward to our last race and to the spring.
