Box Score ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Nova Southeastern University's baseball team (9-2, 1-0) took game one of the opening Sunshine State Conference series of the 2017 season, winning by a score of 9-3 over Eckerd College (3-8, 0-1). Devin Meyer (2-1) earned his second win of the year, tossing six innings and allowing three runs.
The Sharks fell into a 3-0 hole in the bottom of the first inning, as Meyer struggled to settle in on the mound. The redshirt-sophomore right-hander responded with five shutout innings following his rocky first to silence to Tritons offense.
NSU continued to trail Eckerd until the fifth inning when Brandon Gomez laced a two-out double down the left field line, scoring Dylan Woods and Jancarlos Cintron. Following Gomez's clutch hitting was Jake Anchia who snuck a ground ball through the middle of the infield to bring Jeremy Vasquez and Gomez home, giving the Sharks a 4-3 lead.
The Sharks never looked back, going on the score five more runs on the night. Gomez, as he had done in his previous at-bat, drove in two more runs in the seventh inning on a double to right-centerfield. NSU pushed across a seventh run after Kevin Suarez singled and the Eckerd second baseman attempted to back-pick Suarez at first base, but threw the ball away allowing Anchia to walk home.
Arguably the hottest bat on the team, Brendan Cutting pinch-hit for Andrew Liberty in the top of the ninth inning and got the job done, as he singled up the middle to score Suarez and Anchia.
The Sharks will be back in action Saturday against Eckerd at noon in games two and three of the three-game series. Matt Hardy and Joe DiBenedetto will get the rock for the Sharks in games two and three, respectively.
