NSU Athletics Holds 2017 Awards Celebration & Reception

The athletic department honors athletic and academic success on Sunday.

FORT LAUDERDALE – On Sunday, the Nova Southeastern University athletic department held their annual Awards Celebration & Reception, commemorating the 2016-17 season and commending student-athletes for their academic and athletic prowess in a ceremony held at the Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center and presented by Rob Lambin's University Dodge Ram.
 
The afternoon reception was emceed by master of ceremonies, Jeff Winter, with an introductory speech by Director of Athletics Michael Mominey. This year's senior address was presented by men's swimming student-athlete Marco Aldabe.
 
Upon conclusion of the senior address, each team was recognized for their season accomplishments along with the individual standouts listed below. First, receiving the NSU Sportsmanship Awards were women's tennis student-athlete Luicelena Perez and track & field student-athlete Dwayne Edwards.
 
Next, earning the Male Student-Athlete of the Year was junior men's swimmer Anton Lobanov, the school record-holder with six NCAA individual national titles and SSC Male Swimmer of the Year. Women's swimmer Emma Wahlstrom, the SSC Female Swimmer of the Year and individual national champion in the 200 freestyle, was selected NSU's Female Athlete of the Year.
 
Winning the Shark Cup Challenge this year was the Rowing and Volleyball teams, presented by NSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee President Kyle Kilbourne. For the second straight year, women's basketball, by virtue of the department's highest team GPA (3.64), was presented with the 2016-17 JAWS Award by Associate Athletic Director and SWA Kelley Kish.
 
Scholar-Athletes of the Year were presented next, also by Kish. The academic awards were given to Andrea Asti Brun, of men's soccer and women's basketball player Katie Barnard. They had the highest GPA among seniors in this year's graduating class, with Asti Brun earning a 3.97 in his MBA with a concentration in management and Barnard garnering a 3.89 majoring in elementary education.
