Big Bats Leads NSU To Doubleheader Sweep of ESU

Van Gurp homers twice, Anderson once, Baldridge hits inside the park homerun

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – With four home runs all day, the Nova Southeastern softball team powered its way to two wins over the East Stroudsburg Warriors on Sunday afternoon. NSU took the first game 5-2, before blanking the visiting team, 6-0, in the second game.
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP (GAME ONE):
FINAL: Nova Southeastern Sharks 5 (W: L. Storrer, 4-2), East Stroudsburg Warriors 2 (L: A. Dark, 0-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
TOP 1ST | The Warriors were the first to reach the board, taking advantage of a Sharks throwing error for a 1-0 early lead.
 
BOTTOM 1ST | NSU responded in the bottom half of the inning, returning the favor by using an ESU error to knot the game 1-1, before a sacrifice fly by Suka Van Gurp scored Brooke Ferguson, who walked.
 
BOTTOM 2ND | With Tia Williams at second and Ferguson on first, Van Gurp sent her first home run as a Shark over the left field fence, pushing Nova Southeastern's lead out to 5-1.
 
TOP 3RD | A sacrifice fly by East Stroudsburg's Denva Shaw-Tait was the last tally for either team, bringing the final score to 5-2.
 
INSIDE THE STATS:
 
  • Van Gurp finished 1-for-2 with four RBI while Williams was 1-for-3 and scored twice.
  • Sydney Lageyre and Kayla Kight were both 2-for-3 and Miriam Schmoll was 1-for-3.
  • Tossing all 7.0 innings, Lexie Storrer earned her fourth consecutive win, allowing two runs (0 ER) with three strikeouts.

  • This is the first time the two teams have faced off.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
BOTTOM 1ST: With one out on the board, Ferguson reached after getting hit by a pitch for the second time of the day. The next batter, Van Gurp, sent another bomb over the left field fence, mirroring the first game, to give the Sharks an early 2-0 advantage.
 
BOTTOM 2ND | Leading off, Sydney Anderson hit her first home run as a Shark off the first pitch of her at bat to push NSU out to a 3-0 lead.
 
BOTTOM 4TH | After a passed ball allowed pinch runners Lageyre and Nicole Hauck to move to second and third, respectively, a hit to deep left field by Kendra Baldridge was good enough for an inside the park homer, allowing the Sharks to take a 6-0 lead.
 
INSIDE THE STATS:
 
  • The Sharks were limited to four hits, with three of them coming from home runs. The remaining hit was tallied by Aubry Hernandez, who was 1-for-3.
  • Van Gurp finished with two RBI and Baldridge had three.
  • Starting pitcher Schmoll earned the win, pitching the first 4.0 innings and allowing three hits with two strikeouts. Erica Winter finished the last 3.0 innings and gave up two hits with three strikeouts.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
 
  • This is the first game with multiple homeruns for the Sharks since Mar. 30, 2018 (Eckerd, 3).
 
UP NEXT
 
The Sharks will open Sunshine State conference play this upcoming weekend as they travel to Lakeland, Fla. to take on the Florida Southern Moccasins in a three-game series beginning on Friday, Feb. 16 at 6:00 p.m.
