HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Sharks entered their fifth day away from Fort Lauderdale coming off a Monday loss to the Argonauts, but showed determination in returning home on a victory - doing everything necessary to come home a winner.
The first and only lead went to the Sharks in the third inning of Tuesday's non-conference outing, as NSU capitalized on
Jarrett Hall's walk and a steal to plate the run, courtesy of left fielder
Christian Demby's RBI single down the left field line.
In addition to the key third-inning strike, the 2019 debut for senior right-handed starter
Devin Meyer (1-0) proved crucial, setting the tone with a 3.0-inning appearance that saw just three hits and a walk, but struck out two with no runs allowed for the win.
Playing with a lead across seven innings, the Sharks bullpen stepped right into Meyer's stride, stranding 11 of the 16 Argonauts runners thanks to solid performances in the debut of
Kyle Kilbourne, as well as
Cameron Schmidt,
Gil Torres and
JP Williams. Closing out the final 1.2 innings and slamming the door for his second save of the year,
Brock Minich allowed just one hit and one walk, striking out two.
In addition, redemptive fielding by freshman third baseman
Duncan Pastore proved crucial, moving past a pair of errors with key third-out grabs in the seventh and eighth, twice quelling bases-loaded threats to keep the Argos blanked.
With the win, the Sharks split with the Argonauts 1-1 at Spooner Field and close the road swing with a 2-3 record.
