FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Hosting Queens College in a non-conference mid-week doubleheader, the Nova Southeastern softball team picked up a pair of wins on Wednesday evening at the AD Griffin Sports Complex. It took just five innings for NSU to earn a 12-0 victory in game one, before the home team topped the Knights, 8-1, in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
BOTTOM 1ST | The Sharks made a statement in the first inning, recording nine of their 12 runs. After
Sydney Lageyre singled and stole second,
Tia Williams brought her home with an RBI-single. NSU tallied two outs before an error that could have ended the inning allowed
Miriam Schmoll to reach, advancing to second after
Aubry Hernandez was hit by a pitch. A single by
Keeley Mayers loaded the bases before a single to right by
Sydney Anderson scored both Schmoll and Hernandez for a 3-0 NSU lead.
Alex Suzuki was hit by a pitch to load the bases once more, as the next batter,
Kayla Kight scored Mayers with a single to third to make it 4-0. Nova Southeastern advanced their lead to 8-0 as the leadoff batter, Lageyre, sent the ball all the way to the right field fence, good enough for an inside-the-park home run. After a QC pitching change and a single through the left side by Williams,
Suka Van Gurp made it 9-0 with an RBI-double down the left field line.
BOTTOM 2ND | With Mayers on third, a single by Suzuki brought her home for a 10-0 Shark lead.
BOTTOM 3RD | The Sharks' final two runs of the game came in the third. With runners on the corners, an RBI-single by
Mayte Lezcano scored Kight to make it 11-0. After a fielder's choice was made on
Nicole Hauck, catching Lageyre at the plate, a bases-loaded hit by pitch taken by Hernandez finalized NSU's scoring and brought it to 12-0, the winning score.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Williams finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and two scored runs, while Lageyre was 2-for-2 with four RBI and also scored twice. Lageyre also drew a game-high two walks.
- Kight was a solid 2-for-3, scoring twice with one RBI.
- Van Gurp, Lezcano and Mayers were all 1-for-2 with Van Gurp registering one RBI.
- Hernandez, Anderson and Suzuki also recorded an RBI each.
- Lexie Storrer picked up the win for NSU after pitching the first 3.0 innings, not letting the Knights score and allowing just one run. She also struck out three, walking one.
- Erica Winter closed out the final 2.0 innings, striking out two.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Lageyre's inside-the-park homer was NSU's second of the season.
- This was NSU's third run-rule victory of 2019.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP (GAME TWO):
FINAL: Nova Southeastern Sharks 8 (W: M. Scmoll, 8-3), Queens Knights 0 (L: E. Wimmer, 1-2)
RECORDS: Nova Southeastern (18-11), Queens (1-5)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
TOP 2ND | Queens scored their lone run of the night in the top of the second, as Jessica Hickey singled to right center to score Dani D'Angelo for a 1-0 Knights lead.
BOTTOM 2ND | The Sharks didn't let Queens hold on to their lead for long, responding in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of runs off a two-RBI triple by Kight for a 2-1 edge.
BOTTOM 4TH | With one out on the board, Suzuki homered to left center to make it 3-1 before Kight tripled for the second time of the game. Two batters later, Kight was brought home on an RBI-single by Williams before a double by Van Gurp brought her home to make it 5-1.
BOTTOM 5TH | NSU hinted at another run-rule victory in the fifth, but came just short, tallying three runs off a Knights error and a two-RBI single by Williams, to make it 8-1.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Kight was a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI, scoring twice, while Van Gurp was 2-for-3 with one RBI.
- Both Williams and Anderson finished 2-for-4, as Williams recorded a game-high three RBI.
- Suzuki went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
- Schmoll earned game two's victory, pitching all 7.0 innings, allowing one run on just four hits with seven strikeouts.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Schmoll's seven strikeouts were a season-high.
- Tonight's doubleheader sweep brings the overall series to 4-0 in favor of NSU.
