COLUMBUS, Ga. – Continuing their non-conference spring break road trip, the Nova Southeastern softball team split a doubleheader against Columbus State on Wednesday evening at Cougar Field. The host team took the first game, 7-2, before the Sharks rallied to take game two, 4-1.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP (GAME ONE):
FINAL: Columbus State Cougars 7 (W: D. Demarest, 6-3), Nova Southeastern Sharks 2 (L: L. Storrer, 7-7)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
TOP 1ST | With two outs,
Suka Van Gurp sent her third homerun in two days over the left field fence, giving NSU an early 1-0 edge.
BOTTOM 5TH | After three scoreless innings for either team, CSU's Kirstin Reynolds used an RBI-single to knot the game, 1-1, before two batters later, Elizabeth Perdue single to right center to bring home two more for a 3-1 Cougar advantage.
BOTTOM 6TH | Columbus State increased their lead to 4-1 with a solo homer by their leadoff batter, Dodson, before an RBI-double by Hannah Rose Corbin tallied another run to make it 5-1. Their last two runs of the game came from RBI-singles by Reynolds and Perdue, making it 7-1.
TOP 7TH | NSU attempted to rally in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with one out. An error by CSU plated one Shark, but that would be the final run of the ball game.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Lagyere finished 2-for-4 while Van Gurp was 1-for-1 with two RBI and two walks drawn.
- Lexie Storrer tallied the Sharks' fourth hit of the game, going 1-for-3, scoring once.
- Storrer was saddled with the loss, tossing the first 5.0 innings and allowing six runs on eight hits with three strikeouts. Erica Winter closed out the last inning, giving up one run from two hits with one strikeout.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP (GAME TWO):
FINAL: Nova Southeastern Sharks 4 (W: M. Schmoll, 6-3), Columbus State Cougars 1 (L: P. Sorrells, 3-3)
RECORDS: Nova Southeastern (13-11), Columbus State (15-8)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
TOP 2ND | With one out on the board,
Miriam Schmoll singled up the middle and put the Sharks in scoring position after advancing on a wild pitch. An error allowed
Keeley Mayers to reach, putting runners on the corners as Schmoll moved to third. A
Sydney Anderson ground out pushed Mayers to second before a walk drawn by
Kendra Baldridge loaded the bases. The next batter,
Sydney Casteel scored both Schmoll and Mayers with an RBI-single up the middle for a 2-0 NSU lead.
TOP 3RD | After a fielding error by the Cougars allowed
Sydney Lageyre to reach, Van Gurp tripled to right field, scoring her, and pushing the Sharks' lead out to 3-0.
Aubry Hernandez grounded out on the next at bat, but was able to bring Van Gurp home to tally NSU's final run and extended their lead to 4-0.
BOTTOM 4TH | The Cougars recorded their lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth as Corbin grounded out to second, scoring Poston, who led the inning off with an infield single.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Schmoll finished 3-for-4 and scored once. In the circle, she pitched all 7.0 innings and allowed one run on seven hits with two strikeouts.
- Van Gurp and Lageyre were both 1-for-4, scoring once, while Van Gurp added an RBI.
- Casteel went 1-for-1 with her two RBI.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Today's split doubleheader brings the overall series to 7-4 in favor of the Sharks.
UP NEXT
The Sharks will return to conference play, but remain on the road, this weekend as they head south to Miami Shores to compete in a three-game series against host Barry. The first game is scheduled to being on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
