FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The #NSU50 "Top Moments in NSU Athletics History" continues with the 28th moment on the list: For the first time, Nova Southeastern University wins the women's division of the 2007-08 Sunshine State Conference Mayors' Cup, the conference's all-sports trophy.
May 21, 2008
The Sharks' athletics program continued their ascent to the top of the SSC when in 2007-08, the women's side claimed the school's first-ever Mayors' Cup. It was the first trophy gained by NSU since becoming eligible for SSC championships in 2004-05.
In the women's division, points were awarded for final standing in cross country, volleyball, soccer, basketball, golf, tennis, rowing, and softball. In each category, available points depended upon the total number of conference schools that sponsor the particular sport.
To that end, NSU gained a total of 47.5, outdistancing Tampa (41.5), Florida Southern (37.5) and Rollins (36). The program's first-ever championships in women's basketball and women's golf accounted for 17 total points, garnering nine and eight, respectively.
The women's basketball team defeated Tampa on March 9, 2008, 53-47 to win their first-ever SSC title. The women's golf squad followed suit on April 15, by 10 strokes over Florida Southern, and would go on to finish as NCAA runners-up.
Rowing also took home an SSC Championship in 2007-08, their second straight, while placing fourth at the national championships.
Additionally in 2007-08, NSU tied for second in volleyball (earning 7.5 points) and finished third in both cross country (four) and soccer (seven). The Sharks also posted a fourth-place finish in tennis (six) and a fifth-place showing in softball (four).
The Mayors' Cup was first presented following the 1986-87 academic year, and the award was traditionally sponsored by the mayors of the nine communities in which SSC institutions are located.
