FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The NSU rowing team competed in a preseason scrimmage against the reigning Sunshine State Conference Champions, Florida Tech, on Saturday morning on the North New River Canal near campus in Davie, Fla.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
LOCATION: New River Canal | Davie, Fla.
CONDITIONS
- A windy day for rowing with a straight head wind or a direct tail wind depending on the direction of the pieces.
RACE FORMAT
- Athletes competed in the eight boats, however neither team fielded a true Varsity 8 due to injuries or sickness.
- The teams did 6x1400 meter pieces with about a 10 minute break in between races.
- The crews raced in one direction, turned around and raced in the other direction.
RESULTS
BEYOND THE RESULTS WITH COACH FAY
- We definitely pulled hard today, but need to be more unified in our efforts.
- There are some young rowers in the boat and today we had a tendency to focus on just pulling hard instead of pulling hard as well as pulling together, which made it difficult for out crew to maintain cruising speed without over exertion.
- Bringing the team's focus back to how we can move better together, stay in time with the other people in our boat and stay calm in racing situations are all places we will improve as we move into racing season.
- We are thankful that Florida Institute of Technology came down to race us for our first-ever home competition right near campus! We hope to do a similar race in the future.
- It was the perfect venue to honor our senior class of Jenna Beavon, Danica Buse, Gabriella Lopez, Kamaye Nichols, and Victoria Porretti
- We recognized each of these strong young women post-race in a small informal gathering with families and friends.
