Rowing Wins Four Events at Spring Break Race

Sharks begin season-long title defense.

WINTER PARK, Fla. The No. 1 Nova Southeastern rowing team started off its spring season on a strong note at the Spring Break Race on Lake Maitland in Winter Park, Fla. Saturday.

NSU took wins in four out of the seven events the Sharks competed in. The wins included the varsity-8 and four events. The Sharks won the eight-boat race over NCAA Division I schools Villanova and Duquesne as well as Sunshine State Conference foe Rollins. The crew recorded a time of 6:27.3.

The V8 boat was comprised of: coxswain Courtney Berger (Sr., Sarasota, Fla.), Stephanie Hauck (Sr., Somers Point, N.J.), Bethany Warlich (Fr., Leeds Point, N.J.), Tori Torrisi (So., Saratoga, N.Y.), Megan O'Donnell (Jr., Lake Worth, Fla.), Amanda Craig (Jr., Berlin, N.J.), Emily Harrington (Sr., Virginia Beach, Fla.), Remi McClellan (Jr., Mullica, N.J.) and Kelly Scott (Jr., Hobe Sound, Fla.).

The whole team has worked really hard during our spring break training and it showed during our races today," said Hauck. "Even though we had a lot of quick switches and girls rowing multiple races, everyone handled the tight race schedule really well. We're leaving with a lot of confidence, I would say, but we are also aware that this is just the beginning and we have a lot farther to go before we reach peak speed."

Five of the student-athletes from the V8 boat also competed in the V4 event and took first against the three opponents from the V8 race as well as Embry-Riddle. That boat, which recorded a time of 7:22.7, was made up of: Berger, Torrisi, Scott, Hauck and O'Donnell.

The junior varsity-8 boat was put together by: coxswain Sarah Erickson (Jr., Sunrise, Fla.), Adrianna Rosario (So., Pembroke Pines, Fla.), Cassily Lobaugh (Fr., Milton, Ga.), Daesha Roberts (Fr., Yulee, Fla.), Kelsey Obringer (Jr., Port Republic, N.J.), Kristen Page (Fr., San Diego, Calif.), Payton Van Horn (So., Jackson, Mich.), Caitlin Mooney (Sr., Centerville, Mass.) and Rebecca Bergen (Jr., Winnipeg, Canada). The JV8 claimed second with a time of 6:52.8 in its race against Duquesne and Villanova.

The junior varsity-4 boat was compiled by coxswain Amanda Hudon (So., Sebastian, Fla.), Lobaugh, Rosario, Obringer and Moony. That boat took first place with a time of 7:56.2 against Rollins, Villanova and Duquesne.

NSU raced in to novice events, falling short in the eight-boat race wih a time of 7:02.1 but winning the four with a time of 7:31.2 against Rollins, Villanova, Duquesne and Embry-Riddle. NSU's novice-8 crew was represented by coxswain Ashley Nichols (Fr., Inverness, Fla.), McClellan, Warlich, Roberts, Harrington, Craig, Bergen, Falon Irwin (Fr., Galloway, N.J.) and Julianna Jaycox (Fr., Oakdale, N.Y.). The novice-4 was comprised of Hannah DiLorenzo (Fr., Holland Patent, N.Y.), Page, Van Horn, Roberts and Bergen.

NSU will return to Central Florida on March 22 to take on No. 5 Central Oklahoma in a crucial regional battle.
