Swimming and Diving Wins Home Opener Against Rollins

The Sharks won 17 of 22 races against Rollins.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern swimming and diving teams posted another victory in the win column against Rollins as the men’s team (2-0) won 132-64, and women’s team (2-0) won 131.5-64.5. Men’s swimmer Addison Cates (Fr., Port Charlotte, Fla.) (4:41.96) and women’s swimmer Erin Black (Jr., Fort Myers, Fla.) (5:07.44) posted NCAA B-qualifying times in the 500-yard freestyle.

The Sharks were dangerous from the start winning the first 13 races and ended their first home meet of the season with 17 of 22 victories. The winning began in the women’s 400-yard medley relay, when the Sharks relay team of Ashley Aranda (Sr., Kenner, La.), Ewa Jamborska (Sr., Katowice, Poland), Emma Lawrenz (Fr., Minnetonka, Minn.) and Linea Cutter (Fr., Coral, Springs, Fla.) touched at 4:02.50. The quartet of Devan Martin (Jr., Duluth, Ga.), Ashley Bransford (So., Santa Cruz, Aruba), Lauren Chapple (Fr., London, England), and Alexandra Zatylny (So., Quebec, Canada) touched next at 4:08.06.

In similar fashion, the men placed relay teams in first and second in the 400-Medley Relay. The team of Josh Davis (So., Hurron, S.D.), Oscar Aldabe (So., Alicante, Spain), Armin Hornikel (Sr., Goose Creek, S.C.) and Ash Dougan clocked the top time (3:33.53) and the team of Darren Rubenchik (So., Ontario, Canada), Cameron Pfahler (Jr., Neptune Beach, Fla.), Jim Shelley (So., Charlottesville, Va.), and Florian Mehlan  (So., Moers, Germany) finished in second-place (3:38.33).

The Sharks would claim the top-two times in the men’s and women’s races again two events later, during 200-yard freestyle. Black turned her first individual victory of the meet touching at 1:56.58, shaving a little less than a second off of her season best-time. Jessica Rocheleau (Fr., Jacksonville, Fla.) finished after Black at 2:01.40, less than a second off of her season best time of 2:01.25.

On the men’s side Cates stopped the clock the fastest (1:43.64) in the 200-free, posting his first of two NCAA B-qualifying times. Hornikel finished a second behind Cates for second-place (1:44.64). Pfahler would round out the times for the Sharks, touching in 1:49.38 for a new season best-time.

The women’s team would place in the top-three in the 400-yard Individual Medley, paced by Jambroska’s time of 4:40.27. Nichole Schultz (So., Roseville, Calif.) clocked the second-best time, she reached in 4:52.74 and Marie Hanft (Jr., Port Orange, Fla.) finished third, with a season best-time of 5.05.79.

The men’s team finished in the top-three in the 400-IM also and were paced by Aldabe’s time of 4:09.97. Cameron Chambers (Jr., St. Petersburg, Fla.) was a few seconds behind Aldabe, and touched next at 4:12.62. Jonas Grundstrom (Sr., Fagersta, Sweden) rounded out the times for the Sharks, he finished in third-place with a time of 4:13.04.

The tars would win its first race when Nathan Burn finished the 100-yard freestyle in 48.64, less than a second ahead of  Oskar Nordstrand (Jr., Stockholm, Sweden) (48.83). Alexander Tarr (Sr., Everett, Wash.) (52.15) and Jared Fish (Fr., Tamarac, Fla.) would post the third and fourth-best times.

The Sharks compete again Saturday Nov. 12, at the NSU Aquatic Complex, against Indian River and Florida International at 10 a.m.
